This year, Hanukkah officially starts Sunday, December 18 and ends Monday, December 26, totally overlapping with this other lesser-known holiday that a few people celebrate on December 25. Whatever! Hanukkah’s food traditions are often centered around the symbols of miracles, specifically with how the oil used in the menorah to rededicate the Temple in Jerusalem after it had been ransacked was only enough to burn for one day but lasted for eight. Thus, you will find potato pancakes, or latkes, at many Hanukkah tables as well as jelly doughnuts, or sufganiyot, as reminders of this oil that just couldn’t quit. I included those recipes as well as many others that may not be traditionally served at Hanukkah but are definitely part of the Jewish culinary experience and should be enjoyed year round.

Happy Hanukkah to all who celebrate!
